THE MAKING OF LANDER GMT

The Lander GMT holds a special place in our hearts at Farer HQ. Originally debuted back in 2017 as our first complication after our launch three hand mechanical collection, it was a big statement for the brand, defining our ambition beyond the ordinary.

It's been a best seller since day one, with fans across the globe captivated by the unique dial colour. Officially called sea green, it's a true wristworn chameleon when the dial is caught by the light - with many debates raging on social media whether it's actually blue/green or green/blue!

One of the key reasons of the Lander’s popularity is that in a world of GMT bezel models from almost everyone else, the Lander is an ‘internal' GMT with no external bezel, making it an unusual execution to a well known complication. It holds an almost infinite flexibility from dress watch to light tool watch, without ever slipping into an all out sports watch.

A little known fact, the Lander dial colour was originally inspired by a 1950's Porsche 356 colour chart. We took this into the lab and developed a new, unique teal base colour to add a deeper richness - then applied a sunray effect to the colour across the dial creating a wider colour tone to bring the now iconic colour qualities of the Lander to life. Large Arabic numerals, lumed to the brim with 14 coats of Super-Luminova cut through the colour with ice cool freshness. Finally the dial was balanced by our vintage curved syringe hands and pops of colour across the sweeping second and GMT pointer. At the time we knew it was good, but didn't realise how good it would go on to be.

Since launch we have subtly updated each Lander release, now on the fourth edition. From upgrading the movement and boosting the power reserve to creating a matching date wheel (an incredibly technical process to do within a unique colour range). We love every edition - but where we see opportunities to improve, we thoughtfully incorporate the updates while never losing sight of what makes Lander so special.

So popular is the hue of the dial, it has born spin offs - such as the much sort after limited edition Lander Chronograph and the seasonal release Lander GMT Midnight edition. No doubt the future will see further Lander inspired versions across other complications - watch this space.

Spec wise the Lander is no lightweight. Designed to be the ultimate classic case at a size of 39.5mm diameter, slim 10.8mm depth and 20mm lugs. Cut out 316L marine grade stainless steel and highly polished all over to highlight the elegant profile.

The use of a boxed cased, with side walls, sapphire crystal domed glass complements the case, giving the overall watch a unique aesthetic, especially when viewing the vintage curve dial at an angle. Finished with a stainless steel fluted crown and inset bronze cap, embossed with the brand 'A’ completing the Farer design DNA.

Through the flat sapphire crystal case back, you’ll see the Lander GMT is powered by the Swiss-Made Sellita SW330-2 'Top Grade' movement with 25 jewels and bespoke rotor featuring the Farer arrow marque. A high performance calibre that pushes the power reserve up to an impressive 56 hours for a GMT.

The ‘local’ hour/minute hands work on 12-hour time, while the ‘dual time’ GMT hand is independently adjustable to set to any 24-hour time zone and read against the outer track. The date change is linked to the traditional hour hand (local time).
