A TRAVELLERS COMPANION

The GMT function dates back to 1884 when an international convention declared Greenwich, England as the ‘Mean Time’ against which the rest of the world’s time zones would be compared. The ‘local’ hour/minute hands work on 12-hour time, while the ‘dual time’ GMT hand is independently adjustable to set to any 24-hour time zone.

BOLD VS BEAUTY

The dials of each GMT watch have been painstakingly designed to provide maximum legibility whilst still looking incredibly beautiful. The dial is stepped with a sunray finish, with an easy-to-read minute track and a 24-hour scale around its edge. Printed on top of the dial are bold Arabic numerals with layers of Super-LumiNova to ensure the ultimate in nighttime legibility. This is complemented by brushed syringe hands filled with Super-LumiNova, and both GMT and seconds hands, each in a vibrant contrasting colour.

FLOATING PROFILE

The case of the Lander is made from 316L stainless steel and measures 39.5mm in diameter. Combined with a thickness of only 10.8mm, and 20mm, this makes the Lander perfectly proportioned for most people’s wrists. To complement the streamlined curves of the case, the watch has an anti-reflective boxed sapphire crystal that provides some wonderful distortion when you view the dial at an angle. The Lander also has a depth rating of 100m, and each watch is individually numbered, so every GMT Automatic is one of a kind.

The Lander is powered by the Sellita SW330-2. This Swiss automatic movement is the ideal choice, as Sellita are well-known for its accurate and reliable calibres. The SW330 has 25 jewels, a beat rate of 28,800 bph (4Hz), and a 56-hour power reserve. It also has a quick-set date, hacking seconds hand, and of course a GMT hand for tracking a second time zone. Farer uses the ‘Top Grade’ version of the SW330, which has been adjusted in 5 positions and has a unique winding rotor with custom decoration.

REVIEWS
Given that this price point makes the new Chrono-Contempo more affordable than comparable options from brands such as Hamilton and Tissot, this latest release from Farer ultimately presents a rather compelling option within the landscape of mechanical chronographs, and it pairs a proven Swiss-made movement with the brand’s signature colorful design language.
By now we’re used to Farer’s unique flavour of design. That’s to say, taking a classic archetype of a watch and playing around with colour and details to give it more than a fresh coat of paint. Usually though, that’s been tackling things like GMTs, Super Compressors, racing chronographs, a run of watches the word ‘accessible’ feels at home next to. But now the British brand is doing something I never would have expected from them: the Farer Tonneau Collection.
I’m always conscious of sounding like a broken record when I talk about Farer because without fail, I mention how they are the masters of bold colours. I could realistically point to any of their new watches from across the last two years and they’d be fun, fresh and colourful.
There is no question, if you wanted to use the Farer as the archetypal definition of a British watch, it would be an excellent choice. Its inspiration is deep and meaningful, and the character Farer has tried to inject into the design works very well. This does feel like a vintage traveller watch.
At its price point, just under a thousand, the Aquamatic has some stiff competition... With all that said, Farer blows the competition out of the water. The Aquamatic’s closest competitor in terms of quality and attention to detail probably lies several hundred dollars north. The quality and number of fine details on the Aquamatic are astonishing, given the price.
